So, I just wanted to install the unstable amarok with its moodbar feature. In order to find out that
visualization
is not the USE flag for it but
exscalibar
I had to google these use flags which were not active on my system before.

This made me think about the way Gentoo documents use flags. The file
/usr/portage/profiles/use.desc
or the online list is by far not complete. Is there an other ressource I am missing besides Gentoo-Portage.com which only list which ebuild is useing which USE flag?

My suggestion would be to add a list of use flags to the package detail page with a link to the Gentoo Wiki for every use flag (see example below). So everyone could contribute to the use flag description.

See a similar post about the lack of USE flag documentation.

Example

amarok 1.4_beta3-r2
Use Flags: aac arts debug exscalibar flac gstreamer ifp ipod kde musicbrainz mysql noamazon opengl postgres real visualization xinerama xmms

This guide refers to the 4.0.2-r2 ebuild of TWiki.

For a study project of my wife I wanted to install TWiki and picked the ebuild. Installing wasn't that fluid, the bin/configure script was displayed as plain text.

But it's marked ~x86 so why blame the maintainer?

These are the steps which were required to get TWiki running for my setup.

edit bin/.htaccess to contain

Options +ExecCGI
SetHandler cgi-script

This made the configure script display. It complained about

Error: 'TWiki.pm' could not be loaded. The error was:

Can't locate TWiki.pm in @INC
(@INC contains: [...]

Error: Check path to
twiki/lib
and check that LocalSite.cfg is present and readable

Right. TWiki.pm was not readable by the webserver.

# la lib/TWiki.pm
-r--r----- 1 root root 112223 5. Apr 10:35 lib/TWiki.pm

So I chowned all files to the webserver:

# chown -R root:apache ./

configure also mentioned that it could not write the logfiles, so I gave the webserver write permissios to the data dir

find ./data | xargs chmod g+w

It's working

That's it pretty much. TWiki is now running here.

Actually I bought two, the second is for backup purposes. The reason: aquiring an IP address via dhcp took ages with the old one. And it saves 83% energy.
The change is complete after I finished setting up an own dns server, as the Allnet doesn’t provide one.

Finally I just had to change some hardcoded IPs in /etc as I have reorganized my IP layout.

On my HTPC there is a 170 GB Fat32 partition which is shared with the local Windows XP installation. I want to mount that partition local and on other Gentoo PCs in my LAN via NFS. As I had issues with Konqueror displaying rapidly changing file transfer rates I tried different sync/async setting.

These turned out to be the best:

Tivo

/etc/fstab

/dev/hda5 /mnt/store vfat noatime,utf8,uid=65534,gid=100,dmask=0007,fmask=0117 0 0

Mount the partition as nobody:users, async is implied here.

/etc/exports

/mnt/store 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0(rw,all_squash,anonuid=65534,anongid=100,async,insecure)

Export as nobody:users with async flag.

Caull

/etc/fstab

tivo:/mnt/store /mnt/nfs/tivo/store nfs timeo=14,intr,rsize=8192,wsize=8192,tcp,sync 0 0

Mount with sync flag enabled.

This results in stable transfer rates at about 5 MB/s (write) and 10 MB/s (read) via a 100MBit LAN.

I agree. emerge should have a message queue. ebuilds do have messages already, but the often get overlooked during a emerge -uDN world cause they’re only posted once at the end of the build. emerge should save all these notes an messages and state “You have [n] unread notes. You have [n] unread important warning.” everytime you run emerge. The same way it does for updated config files.

I am not a fan of a announce mailing list. It’s like looking on the new ebuilds list [1]. It’s hard and boring to filter out the packages applying to your system(s). emerge is the right place to handle this.

This is a small guide on how to install DBDO on Gentoo.

Update:
Installing libgda now has less dependencies. So you just do a

$ emerge gnome-extra/libgda

$ pecl install dbdo-alpha

and you’re done.

Outdated:
Finally there seems now way around emerging libgda with all its dependencies [1].

$ emerge gnome-extra/libgda

To build libgda from source we need

$ emerge dev-util/gtk-doc gnome-base/gnome-common

After that get libgda from Gnome CVS [2].

$ export CVSROOT=:pserver:anonymous@anoncvs.gnome.org:/cvs/gnome
$ cvs login
$ [enter]
$ cvs -z3 co libgda
$ cd libgda
$ ./autogen.sh && make && make install

Finally we will build DBDO-alpha [3]

$ pear install DBDO-alpha

Add the extension to /etc/php/*-php5/php.ini.
Done.
